The skin needs to be properly hydrated to fulfill its protective function and remain healthy. However, external and internal factors can cause it to lose hydration and the skin barrier to be altered, causing signs such as tightness , redness and itching , among others. These signs can be confused with those of dry skin, but the two conditions are different and require different care.
People tend to think that dry skin is dehydrated skin and that oily skin is free from dehydration, but this is not the case. Both dry, combination and oily skin can suffer from a loss of water and, therefore, show signs of dehydration. Skin types that can be dehydrated:
1). Dehydrated dry skin
The care of dry dehydrated skin should include products that reduce water evaporation and repair the skin barrier. It is important that the care routine includes gentle and high-tolerance cleansers, as well as products that contain active ingredients that provide hydration. In addition, creams with rich textures that contain regenerating, tightening and firming active ingredients to deeply nourish and hydrate are an ideal option to complement this routine.
These moisturizing products can be found in a wide variety of formats that, in addition to the aforementioned hydration, provide another series of benefits. We speak, for example, of antioxidant and/or regenerating ampoules or a serum with hyaluronic acid or proteoglycans, which provide long-lasting hydration. In sun exposures , it is advisable to use a good broad-spectrum photo protector with a moisturizing formulation.
3). Dehydrated oily skin
Oily skin is thick, but at the same time very sensitive, because the frequent appearance of lesions caused by excess sebum causes inflammation. In this case, the products used must be oil-free and non-comedogenic with light textures . In addition, they may contain sebum-regulating active ingredients with the ability to control skin fat and heal and regulate inflammation and are antibacterial.
Although there are people who think that they do not need it, it is always advisable to use a moisturizer formulated for oily skin , which helps them maintain the necessary level of hydration. As for photoprotection , products with non-comedogenic and light formulas should be used, in a gel texture and free of oils, which leave the skin soft, smooth and without shine, while protecting it during sun exposure .
2). Dehydrated combination skin
Combination skin is characterized by having a slight excess of fat in the T zone (forehead, nose and chin) and greater dryness in the cheekbones and cheeks . When cleaning it, it is convenient to use specific products and apply them with small soft and circular massages in the areas with the highest sebum production. If at the end you have to rinse the skin with water, it is preferable that it be cold or lukewarm, since hot water can dry out. As for creams , it is advisable to use specific products that provide hydration without increasing the amount of fat.
